JB Hi-Fi was established in 1974 by John Barbuto trading from a single store in East Keilor, Victoria. He had one simple philosophy: to deliver a specialist range of Hi-Fi and recorded music at Australia’s lowest prices. The business was sold in 1983 and by 1999 another nine stores had been opened.

In July 2000, senior management, backed by private equity, purchased the business with the aim of expanding the successful model throughout Australia. In October 2003, JB Hi-Fi was floated on the Australian Stock Exchange.

Over the years JB Hi-Fi has become one of Australia’s best loved retailers. The evolution of its product range has seen the business move into new areas with its product range now covering Computers, Tablets, TVs, Cameras, Hi-Fi, Speakers, Car Sound, Home Theatre, games, recorded music, movies and TV shows, whitegoods & small appliances.

The number of stores has also grown with the business now operating over 200 stores in Australia and New Zealand.
